Sheila McVan

Sheila McVan

Sheila McVan of Marlowe Avenue, Baxenden, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 9th December, aged 70 years.

Throughout her life Sheila was a hard worker and at the age of 18 joined the Lancashire Constabulary, and served at Morecambe before transferring to Accrington, where she became the Baxenden Community Beat Officer for a number of years before her retirement.

Sheila has always cared deeply for her community and after her retirement involved herself in many local groups and committees, including the Baxenden Forum, Prospects, Hyndburn Stepping Out (where she was leader of the Baxenden Group), Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, the National Vegetable Society and the Baxenden Allotments and Gardens Society, in particular organising the annual flower show.  She also provided her skills further afield with helping to create some of the fabulous floral and vegetable displays at the Southport and Chorley Flower Shows.

She has also worked tirelessly on local community projects, both with the planning and the fundraising for the development of key areas such as the Baxenden MUGA play area, the Hollins Wood Footpaths and the Haworth Art Gallery Rose Garden to name but a few.

When she finally got a minute to herself, she enjoyed gardening at the allotment, walking, as well as going away on Ski holidays. She was also an accomplished artist and spent many hours painting and drawing and loved listening to classical music.

Sheila sadly leaves behind her dearly loving husband Frank, her stepdaughters Ruth and Rachel, her grandchildren Anna, Alec and Edward, her brother David, her nephew Austin and niece Adrienne, she will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her loving family and all those who knew her.

Her funeral service will take place on Monday 21st December at 3pm at Accrington Crematorium for immediate family and close friends only due to the current restrictions.  Any friends and colleagues from Baxenden and Hyndburn are kindly asked should they wish to pay their respects they may do so socially distanced at 2.15pm at Baxenden Recreation Ground behind the floral planters.  A live web cast will also be shown, this can be viewed on the Obitus.com website, with the username Fita1334 and the password 458858.  We recommend that you log in before the funeral takes place to test the connection.  If all is well a moving waterfall accompanied by music should play.

No flowers please, but donations are welcomed for the MND Team – Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity at the Royal Preston Hospital, which Sheila kindly donated to in lieu of presents for her 70th Birthday.  Donations may be made by phone, by post, or by envelope drop off at the funeral home (Accrington or Oswaldtwistle), further enquires please to Barton & Hallworth Funeral Service, 80 Whalley Road, Accrington.
