Douglas Hayes

Douglas Hayes of Merlin Drive, Oswaldtwistle, died unexpectedly but peacefully on Monday 22^nd January 2024, aged 86 years.

Doug as he was fondly known to many, worked as an engineer for Gilbraith’s British Leyland, with him being very skilled at his profession, it became a job that took him working all over the world.  He also worked for Seddon Atkinson’s for a time too.

In his spare time and during his retirement Doug was a familiar face on Hyndburn Borough Council, where he served for over 20 years. Firstly, as a Councillor for the St Oswald’s Ward, before proudly representing the Borough as the Mayor of Hyndburn and a little more recently earning the respected title of Honorary Alderman.   He also devoted a lot of his time to the Freemasons, with him being a current member of the Rhyddings Lodge (Provincial), as well as being a past member of the Leopold Lodge and also the King Oswald Lodge as the Lodge’s do so much for all charity’s.

Doug loved life and loved people and greatly enjoyed socialising, especially going out for meals with his loving wife Sandra and also with friends, often frequenting The White Bull and The Britannia in his hometown of Oswaldtwistle.

He was also a fan of Manchester United and loved watching the rugby, especially his favourite team of Wigan, as well as going away on holiday and going on the occasional cruise. He also loved listening to country music.

Doug sadly leaves behind his much loved wife Sandra, his only sister Margaret, his son Kevin and daughter Gillian and lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was also a dearly loved father in law, brother in law and uncle.

He will be very sadly missed by all his loving family and friends.

His funeral service will be held at 10.00am on Thursday 8^th February 2024, at Immanuel Parish Church, Oswaldtwistle, prior to interment at Accrington Cemetery.
