Brian Howarth

Brian Howarth

Brian Howarth, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Tuesday 9th June 2020, aged 87 years.

Upon leaving school Brian became an apprentice Plasterer and Tiler for a local firm until he was called up for military service, where he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. Upon leaving the Army, Brian worked for many years as a Senior Orthopaedic Technician at Accrington Victoria Hospital up until his retirement and was affectionally known as “The Pot Man”.

From an early age Brian was involved with the Scout movement, an interest that continued in one form or another throughout his life. He was also the Drum Major for the Clitheroe Pipe Band, whilst his wife Doris was a piper and his nephew Malcolm a side drummer. He was also an avid member and stalwart of the Accrington Branch of the Royal British Legion, where he would be a familiar face at local parades and events, he also had the honour of Honorary President bestowed upon him.

During his life Brian was a keen philatelist, plus a collector of reproduction antique weapons. He also had a fond interest in the history of the Great War and his family history. He was also a decent snooker player and referee and has met many of the greats such as Ray Reardon and Stephen Hendry, to name but a few.

Both he and his wife Doris also loved animals, particularly wildlife such as badgers, foxes and owls, having hands on experience of all whilst staying with nephew Malcolm.

He sadly leaves behind his dear nephews Malcolm, Michael and Stephen and niece Linda.

Brian will be very sadly missed by all his family, his fellow Legion pals and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

His funeral service will be held at 10.00am, on Wednesday 15th July 2020 at St James Church, Accrington. Anyone who wishes to pay their respects may do so by adhering to the current social distancing rules in the Church Grounds and along Cannon St. A socially distant Guard of Honour will also be formed at the entrance to the church.

Donations in memory of Brian are being received for the Royal British Legion – Accrington Branch, either over the phone, by envelope drop off at the funeral home (Accrington or Oswaldtwistle), or collection on the day, further enquires please to Paul Barton at Barton & Hallworth Funeral Service, The Old Foxhill, 136-8 Union Road, Oswaldtwistle.
